Sparc Ultra10 boot cdrom problem.

Sun Ultra 10

This is a picture of the Sparc machine I have at my desk at work. I was having problems getting the system to boot off of the cdrom, even after modifying the nvaliases at the ok prompt. After a little research I cracked the shell and looked inside. The last person to do this was a Sun tech who decided that the cdrom be put on the secondary master and the 2 hard drives set as primary master and slave. This configuration will not work in an Ultra 10. I switched it out to where the cdrom was the primary slave. Still didn’t boot. devalias said:

cdrom /pci@1f,0/pci@1,1/ide@3/cdrom@2,0:f

So I figured out that I had to set up an alias for the new hardware location. Here’s what I did

nvalias cdrom /pci@1f,0/pci@1,1/ide@3/cdrom@1,0:f

Bam. It worked. Just a little bit of time and I am now able to install via cdrom.
